Board of Trustees Bio

My name is Dr. Eric Hogenson.

It is really quite difficult, I believe, to write something so you may know me. I like to know someone by sitting down with them and having a nice conversation. Hopefully, you can know me a little by this note.

In my family, some of my siblings were smart. Some were not. My dad was not smart but was able to achieve great things by hard work and determination. Or so I thought.

When I started having children of my own, I was not surprised when my youngest son could not learn to read like the others. I thought he just was not as smart. Jana, however, would not accept this. She found a dyslexia expert and had him tested. Using special techniques for dyslexia, we discovered that my son was very intelligent. With special tutoring (thanks, Julielle) he learned to read over the summer. When we took him back to school in the summer, we were horrified that his new teacher refused to make the necessary accommodations to help him learn. Our choice was to fight his teacher or to take him somewhere else. A friend was taking her children to a charter school in Provo because she thought the education was better. What we found in the charter school was a culture of parental involvement, teachers who were open to new ideas and teachers who were willing to work with students without using the usual constraints. They were willing to look for the genius in all children.

I soon found that a charter school was being planned in Spanish Fork. I was excited and wanted to help. Not only was I allowed to help but also I was allowed to assist in the leadership of the school. We found truly great leaders and teachers. Now we have a school. What a miracle.

I love being a Family Doctor. I get to take care of children, adults, and the elderly. There is nothing I enjoy more than being involved in the miracle of bringing a life into this world. I enjoy experiencing, with a young mother, the excitement of an unborn baby growing inside. Words cannot describe the change from the anguish of labor to the ecstasy of a new mother with her baby in her arms. I love caring for infants and watching them grow and develop. I am pleased that being a doctor gives me more opportunity to help others, both inside and outside of my profession.

As Chief of Staff of Payson Mountain View Hospital, I am deeply committed to the smooth operation of our hospital. I am willing to take the time to help out myself rather than just complain about what should be done. Or maybe I just haven't learned how to say no ;).

I have a young family of my own: my wife Jana and three boys Zachary, Nate, and Jansson. I have to give credit to Jana. When I thought Jansson was just not bright, she brought him to an expert who found him to be quite intelligent. She researched schools and teaching styles. She has spent countless volunteer hours at the school from the start. She still volunteers every day at the school.

When I am not working, I enjoy riding my motorcycle and tinkering with my old car. There is a set of open sand dunes nearby in a State Park called Little Sahara. I find it relaxing to ride over the soft sand. I bought a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro a few years ago and have been fixing it up ever since. I enjoy driving it to work in the summer time. Everyone knows that if I am in the Camaro, I will make it to the delivery on time. Our family bought an RV last year and we have spent a lot of time camping. I have read that families that camp together stay together. If the amount of time we spend together is any indication, we should be together forever.
